Children are the future, a truth that many events and holidays throughout the year serve to reinforce. One such holiday—perhaps not as well known as others of its nature—is National Child Health Day. Observed on the first Monday of every October, National Child Health Day celebrates the care and guidance children need to grow strong and healthy.
Child Health Day emerged in the early 20th century from a plea by the American Federation of Labor and the General Federation of Women’s Clubs. This led to a joint resolution of Congress in 1928 establishing the day. Presidents of the United States from Calvin Coolidge onward have since proclaimed Child Health Day on an annual basis.
The holiday is especially close to the hearts of the Basement Sports team, as the benefits of physical exercise on child development have never been more clear. Be it through baseball, soccer, basketball, dance, or an activity of one’s choice, we encourage children to break a sweat every day, and have fun doing it.
To observe National Child Health Day, steal the opportunity to support the children in your life. They’ll thank you for it later–we promise.
