On Thursday, March 24th, 2022, we hosted the final session of the Jersey City Indoor Sports Camp. We were sad to see the camp come to an end, but were honored to create a positive, healthy, and fun environment for kids of all ages.
We asked one of the participants to describe what the Basement Sports experience meant for her. She spoke highly of the physical space, and praised the program’s balance between structured and unstructured play. “We have a whole space to just be crazy,” she said with a smile. She also praised the smoothies offered by Basement Sports partner Blend FC, saying, “My favorite is the orange and strawberry.” (For the record, I couldn’t agree more: the orange and strawberry is a show-stopper!)
Given our commitment to promoting a happy and healthy lifestyle among youth, this feedback was encouraging to hear. A study of elementary school-aged children linked proper nourishment with improved cognitive performance, short-term memory, and visual perception. The American Academy of Pediatrics, for its part, has stated that the act of play is crucial to children’s development, while researchers continue to uncover the myriad benefits of physical exercise.
Any chance to be part of the solution is an opportunity we welcome. We look forward to the next chance to connect with youth, our society’s most treasured members.
